Ten Week Challenge

Macaroni and cheese with hot dogs.

When one is staring down the barrel of huge life change the responses they could have are varied. You could face the change calmly and maturely thinking through every detail in a logical adult fashion until you are assured of success. You could also have an identity crisis, revert to the age of five, refuse to see logic, and do everything in your power to deny that the change is going to happen.

… So I’m writing this from inside my blanket fort while eating one of my favorite childhood comfort foods and Sleeping Beauty plays on the TV. You can see which decision I made for the last week.

I don't even have my towel. THIS IS HOW UNPREPARED I AM!!!

Here’s how my week has gone.

Monday: I dedicated the whole day to raising funds to cure HIV/AIDS by performing in various venues for the Daedalus project at OSF as the culmination of months of work.

Tuesday: Met with a very trusted mentor to talk about grad schools and was encouraged to chase the dream of becoming a New York actor. That afternoon my friend, who we had loose plans to move to NYC together, got a job in Brooklyn.

Wednesday: I started looking for apartments.

Expensive drum head about it be shredded in 3...2...1...

Probably the cap to this week was going over my season calendar and realizing that only 10 weeks remain till the end of the season. Cue 21-year-old-life-crisis where my dream job was coming to an end AND I was going to pick up my life and move it to the largest city I’ve ever visited in my life.

Thankfully I was blessed by having a pretty smart mom who could feel my panic and sadness from over 300 miles away. Through a series of phone calls and talking off the ledge I was issued a challenge for the remaining time I have here in Ashland as opposed to wallowing in the sadness of leaving my dream.

For the next 10 weeks I will be blogging my adventures as I try to achieve 10 amazing things. These things require effort on my part and would normally cost me something, not necessarily monetary value but time and effort or comfort. The 10 things I have thus far (in no particular order):

1. Meet with the artistic director for both thanking him and getting advice.

2. Make the most amazing monologue book based on shows I’ve seen/read and make me excited as a performer.

3. Take pictures with all the people here who mean something to me/have shaped me and make a scrap book.

4. Bring 4 new monologues to my mentors for coaching.

5. Cook a large homemade meal and invite friends into my home to share my space and food with them.

6. Perform either in part of a variety show or as a part of a midnight project in a featured role.

7. Apply for 5 grad schools.

8. Go on a hike/bike into the hills beyond lithia with friends.

9.

10.

That’s what I have thus far and am still brainstorming more. The overall amazing thing will be to blog about the entire experience both as accountability and in effort to open up myself to my friends here on the internet. So each Monday, look for an update from me to see how it’s going.

Finally, a cup that understand my priorities...

P.S. Sorry this update isn’t as funny as my past ones, but this is more of a personal challenge than a commentary on life. Wish me luck as I’m off to plunder the archives!
